CASE SWISS POST

Swisscom Auto-ID has implemented a roll-cage tracking solution for Swiss Post in worth of 4 million Swiss francs with Confidex Survivor tags. In total of 50.000 Survivors were delivered for the application. Swiss Post will use 750 RFID readers in the system  at its three parcel centers and at 44 transportation hubs. Over a million parcels are being transported with roll-cages that needed to be available at the right time in the right place. Before the RFID solution, there was no way to account the roll-cages accurately which then led to unnecessary transportation of roll-cages between sites. According to the article of RFID Journal, Swiss Post reported to expect yearly savings of 1,5 million Swiss francs due to the implementation of RFID because they do not need to count the roll-cages manually any longer and by reducing transportation.

Confidex Survivor tag is created especially for demanding applications where mechanical strength needs to be combined with high RF performance. The Swiss Post application required a EPC C1G2 chip with extended memory so NXP UCODE with 512-bits was chosen.

Nokian Tyres is a Finnish manufacturer of tires, specializing in winter tires for personal cars, buses and other heavy vehicles. As a result of successful cooperation between three RFID companies Trackway, Elektrobit and Confidex, Nokian Tyres is now deploying RFID based Manufacturing Execution System in their tyre manufacturing processes.

The automated ID implementation covers two manufacturing lines and 27 assembly lines at the production plant in Finland. The tread wagons used in production process were serialised with Confidex SurvivorTM RFID tags that are designed especially for harsh environments and metal surfaces. A total of  1000 Survivor tags were deployed at Nokian Tyres during this project.

Valtra Suolahti tractor factory, that is part of world wide ACGO Group, is using Confidex Pino in their RFID pilot for increasing automation in supply chain and warehouse management. Pino is installed in wooden pallets which are partially painted in order to separate them from the non-RFID pallets.

One of the main advantages of using Confidex Pino is its suitability for both old and new wooden pallets. This means renewing the whole pallet pool is not necessary. Using Confidex Pino enables more efficient data collection, improvement in efficiency and accuracy in the supply chain and warehouse management processes.

The challenge in RFID returnable transport items has been to ensure that the tags fulfill the expected life-span requirement of the transport item – which is several years typically. Confidex’s customized RTI tag addressed this reqruitement with a warranty that enables the customer to calculate the true value of usage. To facilitate application of the tags in the CC Euro Dolly manufacturing process, Confidex developed also a special quality control system to automatically encode and validate reliably the tags. By autumn 2007, in total of 300 000 tags have been delivered for this application.
