EPCglobal was formed in October, 2003 as the successor organization to the MIT AutoID Center, the original creator of the EPC ( Electronic Product Code ). EPCglobal is formed under the umbrella of GS1 ( formerly known as EAN UCC ).
I could still recall the historical moment where AutoID was dissolved and EPCglobal was formed, that was in Tokyo, where I represented IDTechEx Ltd attending the event. All the RFID Pioneer like Kevin Ashton, Prof. Sanjay Sarma, Prof. Jun Murai were there.
EPCglobal is leading the development of industry-driven standards for the Electronic Product Code™ (EPC) to support the use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) in today’s fast-moving, information rich, trading networks.
We focused on creating global standards for the EPCglobal Network™. Our goal is increased visibility and efficiency throughout the supply chain industry. Another focus of EPCglobal is is to create both a world-wide standard for RFID Technology and the use of the Internet to share data via the EPCglobal Network.
EPCglobal’s board of governors includes representatives from EPCglobal, GS1, Auto-ID Labs, Cisco Systems, DHL/Exel Supply Chain, Haier Group Company, Hewlett-Packard, Johnson & Johnson, Kimberly-Clark Corporation, Lockheed Martin Corporation, METRO AG, Novartis Pharma AG, Office of the Secretary of Defense, Procter & Gamble, Sony Corporation, The Dow Chemical Company, Wal-and Mart Stores, Inc.
